Stating that the interim government does not have much time, Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said that the elections have been announced to be held in December. Therefore, the reforms that they want to implement must be done now. He said this in a speech to field-level police officers at the Chief Advisor’s office in Tejgaon in the capital on Monday.
Dr. Yunus said that if the country is to change, everyone must work as a team, not under a single order. And the most important team among all teams in Bangladesh is the police. Whatever the government wants to do, it ultimately has to be implemented through the police. They do not do everything, but rather create a suitable environment for working.
Calling on the police, he said that the responsibility of maintaining law and order lies with the police. If this environment is not created, the government, democratic rights, human rights, and citizen rights—there is nothing. It is not possible to build a country by neglecting the police. They are the people on the front lines.
Stating that the ‘July Uprising’ is a great opportunity, Dr. Yunus said, this opportunity cannot be lost. The police can play an important role in creating this path. In the new Bangladesh, the police must learn from the mistakes of the past and work in a new way. They should work as friends of the people.
He also said, it is not possible to change the history of 16 years. But we must build a new image as the police force of the new Bangladesh. We must help them by standing by the people and within the law.
Regarding the upcoming elections, he said, there will be various pressures in the elections. The police must be strong there, within the law. So that the elected government becomes a government of law.
Among others, Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Home Secretary Nasimul Gani and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam spoke at the meeting. Among the field-level officials, DIG of Chittagong Range Ahsan Habib Palash and Rajshahi Police Superintendent Farzana Islam spoke.
